What was that? A filler episode? Somehow, nothing of real importance happened and things got back to status quo way too soon. Weaver got yet another “lost child” development and I’m not really sure that was neccessary. So yeah, he knows his daughter is alive and well, but he already had a hint in season 1 that not all his family died. And the relationship with Jimmy said a lot more about him than the brief “you were a bad father” – “yes, I was” interaction with his daughter. At least, I don’t feel I really learned anything new about Weaver.
Or Matt, for that matter. I already knew he wanted to be a fighter despite being 9 years old. And I already knew in the pilot of season 1 that he is nowhere near a healthy relationship with “reality” or “his situation”. He wanted a birthday party in the freaking apocalypse, after all. Now he didn’t get that a 9 years old child – a very popular harness age – can’t just run out with a gun. Did it really take a gang of kids, almost being harnessed and an entire episode to illustrate that?
Lourdes learned that no-one from her Mexican hometown survived. Now that might have been relevant, if she had lost more than 2 lines about it. Dai is still a glorified extra and had zero lines. And to add insult to injury for the ranks of glorified extras, not even a mention of Anthony. I know I’ll be really disappointed if he just shows up outta nowhere one day, saves the day and returns to being “the guy who stands around in the background”, without showing a single moment of his time away from the 2nd Mass. An episode or two of shore leave won’t hurt Pope, but if Anthony is out of sight, out of mind for too long, people will go “and who the hell are you”, should he return later.
The one thing of note that happened: Hal saw Ben’s harness glow in the harness facility. That’s not really a whole lot, and I sure hope the next episode will address this.
